Job Description

The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring a team of four reporters dedicated to driving our digital weekend news operation. These positions will balance breaking news, aggregation, daily and feature reporting assignments to create a distinct weekend edition of The Inquirer that’s responsive to emerging news but also consistently delivers engaging and useful content that inspires people to incorporate The Inquirer into their weekend routines.

If you’re adept at quick and thorough reporting, or you know how to spot the real story amid the noise, or you can assemble a great yarn, the Inquirer Weekend team is a good fit for you. We want applicants who know how to balance sharp news judgment with a broad and open-minded willingness to pursue new story forms and non-traditional stories.

The Inquirer Weekend reporters will report to the Senior Editor, Inquirer Weekend and be an extension of the newsroom’s Team Now. They’ll share that team’s broader mission of ensuring that The Inquirer owns the Philly story of the day. These positions will be based in the Greater Philadelphia area, but many shifts will be able to be worked either from home or the field. You will work four, 10-hour days each week, Thursday-Sunday.

What You’ll Do

  • Report on breaking news across various beats and collaborate on handing developing stories off to other reporters when needed.
  • Identify what Philadelphians are talking about across social media platforms and bring those conversations to our readers.
  • Aggregate news stories that affect our region, with an eye on how to move that story forward.
  • Contribute to live coverage during breaking news and major events and help pioneer new ways of bringing those moments to our audience.
  • Pitch and execute on ideas for recurring features and coverage concepts that are particularly well-suited for engaging a weekend audience.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment

Who We’re Looking For

  • Early and mid-career reporters with the ability to cover a range of topics and generate creative story ideas.
  • A reporter who is always thinking about the best way to tell a story.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for on-the-ground reporting. We’re seeking candidates who want to get out there. Drivers license required.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt in an unpredictable news environment.
